Rev. Sue Ann Raymond Receives St. Stephen's Award
Earlier this year, Rev. Sue Ann Raymond, a deacon at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Independence, was awarded a St. Stephen’s award from the Association for Episcopal Deacons (AED).
“Rev. Raymond was notified by The Rev. Kristi Neal, AED President, that she would be the recipient of the St. Stephen’s Recognition award for Province VI for ‘demonstrating a deep commitment to the special ministry of servanthood following the practice of St. Stephen … by making Christ’s redemptive love known through your word and example, to those among whom you live and work.’”
Nomination Submission, from Rev. Judith Crossett:
When Sue Ann Raymond came to Independence to St. James’ Church, she heard “it’s been closed for 30 years.” She had visited and felt a call: she was needed here. St. James’ needed to be in the community, which needed to be shown the church.
Sue Ann was called to be a deacon in Colorado. After ordination in 1999, she worked with ka variety of populations and ministries, led mission trips.
In 2007 she started Hot Dog Friday: hot dogs for anyone. Other food started coming: chips, brownies, salads. Many who come aren’t part of the congregation. They are fed, form relationships, and contribute. Hot Dog Friday is known throughout the Diocese not only as a ministry of food and hospitality, but also as an example of how small communities can redefine success and remain vital.
Sue Ann has a gift: to accept what is and turn it to God’s work. She is getting cancer treatment-again. The first time, someone asked, Who’s driving you to your treatment? I am, she said. No you’re not. I’ll do Mondays, who’s for Tuesdays? With recurrence, she let folks know she would accept drivers. Many offered. Sue Ann says some are people she doesn’t know, but the rides let her get to know them. Radiation treatments become relationships.
Sue Ann has stepped back from some of her work. She says the church was once kept up by a few volunteers; it is returning to a community church run by volunteers, and “that’s all right.”
Deacon Sue Ann has served on diocesan committees. She attends our monthly deacon zooms. She rarely misses a diocesan gathering. St. James’ Church, Independence, the deacon community, and the diocese are blessed to have Deacon Sue Ann.
