Growing Together: Intercultural Development in the Diocese

By Rev. Elizabeth Gillman

The Episcopal Diocese of Iowa is taking an intentional step toward building a more inclusive and culturally responsive church. The Rt. Rev. Betsey Monnot and the Board of Directors decided to assess several key leadership groups including the Bishop’s staff, Standing Committee, Commission on Ministry, and the Board itself—using the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), a research-based tool that measures intercultural competence.

Intercultural competence is the ability to engage meaningfully and respectfully across cultural differences. By participating in this assessment, diocesan leaders are committing to greater self-awareness, deeper empathy, and a shared journey of growth. This work is rooted in the Gospel call to love, justice, and transformation, and reflects our desire to lead by example in a rapidly diversifying world

The Beloved Community Initiative has already started guiding this process by helping leadership bodies reflect on their current practices and identify ways to foster more equitable and inclusive communities of faith. This initiative is not about checking a box, it’s about becoming a church where everyone belongs, where differences are honored, and where leadership is shaped by humility, accountability, and the reconciling love of Christ.

Through this work, the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa strengthens her commitment to being a Spirit-led community where all are valued, heard, and respected.
