A Plan for the Episcopal Church in Iowa
Years of our Lord 2008-2012

Shared Ministry is our diocesan focus during 2012

Ministry is not a solo act. It is Christ's choice that calls us into ministry. Thus, from the outset, we share in it with Him and everyone He calls.
  • How is the shared ministry of the Church reflected in the life and working of this diocese?
  • How are we supporting one another?

The Strategic Plan Task Force is working on the development of the next diocesan strategic plan.

The Task Force has reached the general survey stage in its work. They have already heard from Convention delegates, members of the Diocesan Board, and Commissions attending All Commissions Day, as well as Diocesan staff at their recent retreat.

Now they want to broaden the conversation, and include the members of each congregation. The Task Force is deploying the method of “meaningful conversations” of the Asset Based Community Development system to gather the data which can inform the plan’s themes for the next few years, starting in 2013.

They wish your local conversation to be held sometime in Lent at the congregation’s convenience. Individuals will be assisted in how to facilitate the session, but we need your help in identifying who could do this role well for your congregation.

So please, keep an eye open for material from the Task Force, and look to identify a potential facilitator who could lead a congregation through the conversation one Sunday in Lent. A scribe will also be needed.

Task Force

Convenor:
The Rev. Richard Graves (St. Mark's Church, Fort Dodge)

Members:
Ms. Julianne Allaway (Diocese of Iowa)

Mr. John Gardner (Trinity Cathedral, Davenport)

The Rev. John Horn (Christ Church, Burlington)

Ms. Phyllis Melton (Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Des Moines)

Mr. Ryan Pendell (Church of the Savior, Orange City)

The Rev. Catherine Quehl-Engel (Trinity Church, Iowa City)

Ms. Kate Rose (Christ Church, Cedar Rapids)

The Rev. John Thorpe (St. Stephen's Church, Newton)
This strategic plan is meant to be a guide

based on our collective hopes and desires, on how we might best and most wisely serve God as the Episcopal Church in Iowa. It focuses on four strategic ministry areas:

Shared Ministry
Strengthening Congregations
Next Generations of Faith
Anglican-Episcopal Identity

From Bishop Scarfe:

I pray that this plan offers a guide for our common ministry, and can be engaged at every level. I hope it will be a plumb line for every Diocesan Commission and local congregation as you set forth your goals for the coming years. I trust it is a plan in which you see your words and your desires as Christian people, for it was created from your common voice.

The 23 themes of Episcopal identity emerged through a four-year study called the Episcopal Identity Project. It's a conversation about who we are as Episcopalians — our identity, our wellness, our mission — and how our sense of identity is expressed through our lives and the call we explore in ministry. On this webpage you can view a video and download the report. Use it as a conversation starter and educational tool in your parish and family.

The above list is not, by any means, exhaustive. We hope you will share with us those Resources that you find most helpful, so that those might also be shared more broadly with others throughout the Diocese of Iowa. To submit additional Resources for this list, please contact diocese@iowaepiscopal.org
