Join us for the 20th Annual Summer Ministry School and Retreat at Grinnell College

 
  • Choose from over fifteen tracks to deepen your spiritual life, ministry, and growth in God.

  Worship, learn, laugh, and refresh your soul among people from all over The Diocese of Iowa and beyond.

  Cultivate your inner life, tranquility of heart, and both devotion and God consciousness (“unceasing prayer”) amid your daily life and work. Group gather times will enfold spiritual exercises and wisdom based on The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis whose Feast Day we honor this weekend.

* Continuing Education Unit Credit through The Episcopal Divinity School is available (but completely optional) for tracks indicated with an asterisk. An additional $25.00 and some additional paperwork is required for CEU credit.


 

FREE TIME REJUVENATION Saturday Afternoon


This year, the Free Time on Saturday (1-4 PM) is completely unstructured so you can relax and take time to find center.
The following optional opportunities are planned for your use in rejuvenating and feeding your spirit:
 
HEALING TOUCH MINISTRY CLINIC On Saturday from 1:00-4:00 PM there will be healing touch practitioners on site from Trinity-Iowa City. From 1:00-1:30 an introduction to healing touch spiritual ministry will be offered. Appointments follow offering the ancient practice of laying on of hands to assist those who seek spiritual healing, wholeness, and renewal of energy. Advanced registration is recommended. A free-will offering is suggested though not required.

Gentle BIKE RIDE Pack your bike, helmet, water bottle and other gear and join Diana Wright as she leads a group on a ride. Please pre-register for this ride so trails of appropriate distance and difficulty can be chosen.

Swimming An indoor pool is available on the campus. Parental supervision required.

Shopping The lobby of the Joe Rosenfeld building will be informative, and Cokesbury Books will offer a wide variety of titles and items for sale.

Converse, Read, Journal, or Nap The Grinnell College Campus and dorms offer many nooks and lobbies both indoors and outdoors that you can use to create a sacred space for your own renewal.
 

SCHEDULE & 
CHECK-IN


Check-in
will take place on Friday, July 24 from 3:30-6:45 PM in the Joe Rosenfield Center. 
A Pre-Retreat Workshop is being offered beginning at 4:00 PM on Friday.
The Retreat will begin at 6:45 PM with a Welcome and Orientation followed by the Track Groups. Track Groups will meet three times on Saturday along with a Rejuvenation time in the afternoon and a social time in the evening. Track Groups will meet once on Sunday morning followed by a Eucharist service and lunch before everyone heads for home. Click here for the full schedule
 

CORPORATE WORSHIP 


Compline, Morning, & Evening Prayer
We gather to worship and rest in God. Compline, Evening Prayer, and Morning Prayer services follow The Daily Office. Music is led by The Rev. Glenn Rankin.
Eucharist is celebrated Sunday before lunch at the end of the retreat. Bishop Alan Scarfe will preside. A special offering for Summer Ministry School & Retreat Scholarship Fund is also received in that service.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE FEES

• Retreat Fee includes your track classroom and instructor, worship and fellowship

• All packages include 3 meals on Saturday, AND Breakfast and Lunch on Sunday (no Friday meals are included). 

• Bring snacks to share on Friday and Saturday Evenings.
 

Ways to Register

 
  • Online Registration with payment by credit card (Visa or MasterCard)  

  • Online Registration with payment by check. Mail your check to Episcopal Diocese of Iowa, Summer Ministry School & Retreat, 225 -37th St., Des Moines, IA 50312. If your payment is not received by the Registration Deadline, your registration will not be ini effect.

  • Register by mail. Download, print and complete the Mail-in Registration Form

 

How to Total Your Payment Amount

  • Remember that a Parental Release and Medical Release form is required for each child younger than 18 years of age
  • Dorm rooms have a maximum of 2 beds in each room.
  • Up to 2 children may sleep on the floor in each dorm room (bring your own bedroll and towels).
 
INDIVIDUAL ADULT Payment Calculation
Add your base price to any additional discounts & fees
(Children ages 16 and up are considered adults for payment purposes)

 • Private rooms (one adult) base price $150.00 per person
 • Semi Private Rooms (2 adults) base price $140.00 per person
 • Commuter Option (no lodging included) base price $90.00 per person
 
FAMILY WITH CHILDREN Payment Calculation
Add up your base price, take a family discount, then add any additional discounts and fees.
  
 BASE PRICE
    • 1 Adult in a family base price $150.00 
    • 2 Adults in a room (includes ) base price $140.00 each
    • Age 15 or under on a Bed (linens provided) base price $60.00 each
    • Age 15 or under on the floor (no towels provided) base price $50.00
    • A crib you bring is “on the floor” for payment purposes

 FAMILY DISCOUNT
    • Reduce your cost by $10.00 for every family member you register after the first 2. (For example, a family of 3 would subtract $10.00, a family of 5 would subtract $30.00.)

EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT Reduce each adult's base price by $20.00 if you are registering by June 13, 2009

 • LATE REGISTRATION FEE Increase each adult's base price by $25.00 if you are registering after July 10, 2009

 • CEU CREDITS If your track is eligible and you would like to get CEU credits for your participation add $25.00

 • NO REFUNDS will be issued for cancellations after July 17, 2009
 
 • SCHOLARSHIPS: Some confidential partial scholarships may be available. Contact Catherine Quehl-Engel if you need to take advantage of this program. There are ways to offset your costs by volunteering as well, so please contact Catherine if finances hamper your ability to participate.

 


HOW DO I GET THERE?

Directions to Grinnell College:


From I-80: Take exit 182 north three miles on Highway 146. Turn east (right) on Sixth Avenue (Highway 6). Proceed two and one half blocks on Sixth Avenue to the Grinnell College campus. 

From southwest Wisconsin: Take Highway 151 through Dubuque, Iowa to I-380 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Take I-380 south for approximately 16 miles and then head west on I-80. Follow the directions above for "From I-80." 

From Waterloo and other points in northeast Iowa: Take Highway 63 south to the stop sign with Highway 6. Head west on Highway 6 into Grinnell. Grinnell College will be on the right. Highway 6 becomes 6th Ave.
